<a href="https://files.constantcontact.com/b83ed870601/93753b80-b5ca-4863-bc0b-739194d06ea6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="238" data-original-width="360" height="211" src="https://files.constantcontact.com/b83ed870601/93753b80-b5ca-4863-bc0b-739194d06ea6.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #2d2c2e; font-family: Arial, Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", Times, serif; font-size: 14px;">Both brothers were famous for different reasons. Artem Mikoyan was a famous aircraft designer and the younger brother of Anastas Mikoyan, the statesman whose career encompassed fifty years of the Soviet regime.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #2d2c2e; font-family: Arial, Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #2d2c2e; font-family: Arial, Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", Times, serif; font-size: 14px;">Artem (Anoushavan) Mikoyan was born in the village of Sanahin (Lori, in Eastern Armenia), on August 5, 1905. He also had one other brother and two sisters. He started his elementary studies at the village school, and, after his father’s death, his mother sent him to Tiflis, where he graduated from a local Armenian school. </span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #2d2c2e; font-family: Arial, Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #2d2c2e; font-family: Arial, Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", Times, serif; font-size: 14px;">In 1923 he moved to Rostov-on-the Don, along his elder brother Anastas. He took a work as a machine tool-operator, but a year later he moved to Moscow, working in a similar position in the “Dynamo” factory until 1928 before being conscripted into military service. In 1931 he joined the Zhukovsky Air Force Academy, where he created his first plane. Following graduation in 1937, he worked with Nikolai Polikarpov before being named head of a new aircraft design bureau in December 1939. Together with Mikhail Gurevich, Mikoyan formed the Mikoyan-Gurevich design bureau, producing a series of fighter aircraft. The first MiGs were not that successful. In 1941, however, he won the first of his six Stalin Prizes (the next ones would come in 1947, 1948, 1949, 1952, and 1953), which would be renamed USSR State Prize after the death of Joseph Stalin in 1953.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #2d2c2e; font-family: Arial, Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", Times, serif; font-size: 14px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #2d2c2e; font-family: Arial, Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", Times, serif; font-size: 14px;"></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #2d2c2e; font-family: Arial, Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", Times, serif; font-size: 14px;">Early post-war designs were based on captured German jet fighters and information provided by Great Britain or the United States. The first production model was the MiG-9 of 1946. The I-270 prototype based on German ideas and a British engine became the MiG-15, which despite its mixed origins, it had excellent performance and formed the basis for future fighters, with over 18,000 MiG-15s manufactured. In 1953 came the MiG-17, which reached the speed of sound, followed by the famous MiG-19, the first serial Soviet supersonic fighter.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #2d2c2e; font-family: Arial, Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #2d2c2e; font-family: Arial, Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", Times, serif; font-size: 14px;">From 1952, Mikoyan also designed missile systems to particularly suit his aircraft, such as the famous MiG-21. He continued to produce high performance fighters through the 1950s and 1960s, including the MiG-25, the fastest and the highest-flying fighter. The MiGs have been a part of air forces for decades. His fighters scored 55 world records. In particular, the MiG-15 and MiG-29 held records of speed and height for a long time.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #2d2c2e; font-family: Arial, Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", Times, serif; font-size: 14px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #2d2c2e; font-family: Arial, Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", Times, serif; font-size: 14px;"></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #2d2c2e; font-family: Arial, Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", Times, serif; font-size: 14px;">The MiG-15s were the jets used during the Korean War by Communist forces. U.S. Air Force pilots named “MiG Alley” the northwestern portion of North Korea where the Yalu River empties into the Yellow Sea. During the war, it was the site of numerous air battles between U.S. fighter jets and those of Communist forces, particularly the Soviet Union.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #2d2c2e; font-family: Arial, Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", Times, serif; font-size: 14px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #2d2c2e; font-family: Arial, Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", Times, serif; font-size: 14px;"></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #2d2c2e; font-family: Arial, Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", Times, serif; font-size: 14px;">Mikoyan was twice awarded the highest civilian honor, the Hero of Socialist Labor, and was a deputy in six Supreme Soviets. He also earned other honors, such as the Order of Lenin (six times), the Order of the Red Banner, the Order of the Patriotic War 1st class, the Order of the Red Star (twice), and the Lenin Prize (1962). In 1968 he was elected a member of the USSR Academy of Sciences.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #2d2c2e; font-family: Arial, Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", Times, serif; font-size: 14px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #2d2c2e; font-family: Arial, Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", Times, serif; font-size: 14px;"></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #2d2c2e; font-family: Arial, Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", Times, serif; font-size: 14px;">After a stroke in 1969, Artem Mikoyan passed away on December 9, 1970, and was buried in the Novodevichy Cemetery in Moscow. After his death, the name of the design bureau was changed from Mikoyan-Gurevich to simply Mikoyan. However, the designator remained MiG. Many more designs came from the design bureau such as the MiG-23, MiG-29, and MiG-35.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #2d2c2e; font-family: Arial, Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", Times, serif; font-size: 14px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #2d2c2e; font-family: Arial, Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", Times, serif; font-size: 14px;"></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #2d2c2e; font-family: Arial, Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", Times, serif; font-size: 14px;">Mikoyan was inducted into the International Air and Space Hall of Fame at the San Diego Air and Space Museum in 1996. There is a string of places that remember him in Armenia: a high school and a monument at the Erebuni airport of Yerevan; a military unit placed in Gyumri; a monument at the Mikoyan Brothers Museum in Sanahin, their birthplace, and a memorial in the same town.</span></div>

A reviewer wrote in the journal <span style="font-style: italic;">Man</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;"> </span>: “The result is this magnificently printed and illustrated mixture of travel notes and impressions, historical and archeological research, political ratiocination, and geographical information.” He was talking about Henry Finnis Blosse Lynch’s <span style="font-style: italic;">Armenia: Travels and Studies, </span>which became the premier source of historical and geographic information about Armenia at the beginning of the twentieth century.</div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", Times, serif; font-size: 14px;">Lynch was a British traveler and politician with an Armenian connection. His maternal grandfather, Robert Taylor, was a twenty-year-old ensign member of the British East India Company sent to Persia who eloped with the twelve-year-old Rosa, daughter of an Armenian merchant of Shiraz, in the 1790s. One of his daughters, Caroline, married Lt. Henry Blosse Lynch, of the East India Company navy. In 1841 the latter founded Lynch Brothers in Baghdad, a commercial firm that exported goods from Great Britain to Mesopotamia, along with two of his brothers. One of them, Thomas, a classical scholar at Trinity College in Dublin, ended up marrying Harriet, Caroline’s sister, who became the mother of H. F. B. Lynch, and the other, Stephen, married a daughter of another Armenian merchant. </span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", Times, serif; font-size: 14px;">Henry F. B. Lynch was born on April 18, 1862, in London. He was educated at Eton College, the University of Heidelberg (Germany), and Trinity College in Cambridge. He relinquished a career in law in favor of working for Lynch Brothers. In the late 1880s, he was sent to Baghdad to learn the company business and expand it into Persia. He became the company's chairman in 1896.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", Times, serif; font-size: 14px;">In the meantime, his Armenian connection—which he avoided to mention in his book—possibly led him to undertake a seven-month trip to Armenia in 1893-1894, where he attended the consecration of Khrimian Hayrig as Catholicos. He would have another four-month trip in 1898, accompanied by F. Oswald, with whom he collaborated in producing a detailed map of historic Armenia and its neighbors. Three years later, he published his two volume book, </span><span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", Times, serif; font-size: 14px; font-style: italic;">Armenia</span> <span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", Times, serif; font-size: 14px;">. It was reprinted in 1967, 1990, and 2011. The reprint of 1990 was undertaken by the Armenian Prelacy. The two-volume set along with a beautiful color reproduction of his original map were quickly sold-out. The book was translated twice into Armenian (London, 1902, and Constantinople, 1913-1914). He wrote on the Cathedral of Ani, for instance: “The impression which we take away from our survey of these various features is that we have been introduced to a monument of the highest artistic merit, denoting a standard of culture which was far in advance of the contemporary standards in the West.”</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", Times, serif; font-size: 14px;">Lynch was elected in 1906 as a member of the British Parliament for Ripon, but was defeated in 1910. He suddenly passed away at Calais (France) on November 24, 1913. </span></div>

Maria Jacobsen in Lebanon and Karen Jeppe in Syria. Two Danish missionaries among several colleagues who became surrogate mothers to the Armenian orphans who had survived the genocide, selflessly offering their entire life to them. In the meantime, they also became living testimony of what had happened in 1915.<br />
<br />
Jacobsen was born in the town of Siim (central Denmark) on November 6, 1882. During her childhood, she lived in the town of Horsens, on the eastern coast of the country, with her parents. She learned about the Hamidian massacres (1895-1896) from the Danish media. Feminist activist Jessie Penn-Lewis, coming to Denmark from England in 1898, helped form the Women’s Missionary Workers (KMA; Danish: Kvindelige Missions Arbejdere ) two years later. The new organization supported Armenian orphans sheltered in German orphanages of Mush, Van, Marash, and Kharpert. After completing nursing courses, Maria Jacobsen became a member of KMA in 1906. She left for Kharpert the next year, at the age of twenty-five, as a missionary. She was appointed as director of a small hospital there, and in a short time she learned Armenian in order to communicate with local people. She started writing her 600-page valuable diary in September 1907 and would continue it for the next twelve years.<br />
<br />
Jacobsen stated in an entry about the deportation of Armenians (June 26, 1915) that, “It is quite obvious that the purpose of their departure is the extermination of the Armenian people.” She added that what could have been done in 1895 was impossible twenty years later: “The Turks know very well about the war raging in Europe, and that the Christian nations are too busy to take care of Armenians, so they take advantage of the times to destroy their ‘enemies.’” Her diary mainly describes the deportation and exile of the Armenians of Kharpert, and scenes of murders perpetrated by the Turks from 1915-1919: “These poor people did not look like humans any more, not even animals could be found in this state, people would be merciful and kill them.” She reported that the Turkish authorities demanded to hand over the orphans from the American missionaries, but many of them were killed when this happened. During this period, Jacobsen adopted three children.<br />
<br />
After World War I, with the support of Near East Relief workers, Maria Jacobsen gathered more than 3,600 Armenian wandering orphans, most of them suffering from infectious diseases and reduced to skeletons. In 1919 she left the Ottoman Empire after contracting typhus from the orphans. After going to Denmark, she was invited to visit the United States, where she had public lectures about the massacres and raised money for the orphans. She tried to go back to Kharpert in 1920-1921, but she was not allowed to enter the Ottoman Empire. She subsequently went to Lebanon, where she continued her activities.<br />
<br />
In July 1922 she settled in Zouk Michail which was between the cities of Byblos and Beirut (this was the first orphanage of K.M.A.) with 208 children from Cilicia. They later moved to Saida. In 1928 K.M.A. acquired the building of the Armenian orphanage of Jbeil from the American Near East Relief, establishing the Danish orphanage “Birds’ Nest.” By its status “Birds’ Nest” was more like a school than an orphanage. The same subjects of public schools of Lebanon were taught, along with different crafts.<br />
<br />
The Armenian orphans referred to Maria Jacobsen as “Mama Jacobsen.” She often read the Bible to the orphans in Armenian. Her humanitarian activities were deservedly acknowledged by her homeland. She was awarded the golden medal of the Danish Kingdom in 1950, becoming the first woman in the country who earned that highest state award. She was granted the Gold Medal of Honor by the Lebanese government in 1954 for her service and dedication to the Armenian community.<br />
<br />
Maria Jacobsen died on April 6, 1960, and, according to her will, she was buried in the courtyard of the Birds' Nest. Her diary, which she had secretly smuggled out of the Ottoman Empire, was translated into Armenian and published in Danish original and Armenian translation in 1979. An English translation was published in 2001. Her bust was inaugurated in California in 2016 and a kindergarten in the town of Ijevan (Armenia) bears her name.Vartan Matiossianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06641475268460213986noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1156058546032901783.post-72970881055112438782019-11-06T22:24:00.001-05:002020-09-15T21:11:22.369-04:00Մարիա Եաքոպսըն (ծնունդ՝ 6 Նոյեմբեր, 1882)<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Hagopos Dashian (October 25, 1866)The Viennese branch of the Mekhitarist Congregation, founded in 1811, has been remarkable for its erudition, as reflected in its publications and particularly its journal Handes Amsorya, which has been continuously published for over one hundred and thirty years since 1887. One of the main names of that “golden age” of the Vienna Mekhitarists was Fr. Hagopos Dashian, who enriched Armenian Studies with his important publications over a span of forty-five years.<br />
<br />
Born Franciscus Tashjian in the village of Ardzati, in the province of Karin (Erzerum), on October 5, 1866, he learned the first letters in the parochial school of Erzerum. In 1880 his parents sent him to the seminary of the Mekhitarist monastery in Vienna. Three years later, he took the vows as a novice and adopted the name Hagopos, and in 1885 became a member of the congregation. In 1889 he finished his studies and was consecrated priest. In the same year, he became a teacher of philosophy and Armenian language at the monastery. After signing his first works as “Tashjian,” in 1890 he adopted the Armenian surname Dashian.<br />
<br />
An iron will of learning endowed Fr. Hagopos Dashian with comprehensive knowledge of the Armenian language, as well as history, geography, and literature. This included a well-rounded command of almost a dozen ancient and modern languages. As his younger colleague, Fr. Nerses Akinian wrote, “he did not go to schools of higher education, but his knowledge bewitched university lecturers and professors.”<br />
<div>
<br />
From 1893-1909 he visited Venice, Berlin, Constantinople, Smyrna, and Erzerum. From 1909-1912 he was the abbot of the Mekhitarist convent of Constantinople. Returning to Vienna in 1912, he was a member of the Administrative Council of the congregation.<br />
<br />
At the age of twenty-five, in 1891, he published the catalog of manuscript of the Royal Library of Vienna, followed by the catalog of manuscripts of the Mekhitarist Congregation of Vienna (1895), which he compiled in two years, including 571 manuscripts with detailed information of encyclopedic character about each unit. The mode of cataloging received the name of “Dashian style” in Armenian philology.</div>
<div>
<br />
Two years later, in 1897, he completed and prepared for publication the study on the Armenian Divine Liturgy, compared with the Greek, Syrian, and Latin liturgies, which his predecessor Fr. Hovsep Katerjian had left unpublished.<br />
<br />
After that, he took over the publication of another unpublished work written three decades before, Fr. Kerovpe Spenian’s Study of the Armenian Classical Language. To this end, he submerged himself into a study of the origins of the Armenian people and many historical and linguistic issues related to it. This resulted into the publication of the 700-page book in 1920, with a posthumously published continuation, Hittites and Urartians (1934).<br />
<br />
Dashian was an indefatigable researcher, publishing studies on Agatangeghos (1891), the Life of Alexander by Pseudo-Callistenes (1892), Armenian paleography (1898), authors of the early centuries of Armenian literature (1898 and 1901), and many other issues. He translated into Armenian books by eminent foreign scholars of Armenian Studies, such as Heinrich Hübschmann, Heinrich Petermann, Paul Vetter, Friedrich Müller (from German), Frederick Conybeare (from English), Nikolai Marr (from Russian), and others. He was the point person for any Armenian or non-Armenian scholar who had a query about issues related to the discipline.<br />
<br />
The shock that he suffered after learning the fate of his people in 1915 brought him to deal with contemporary subjects too. In 1921 Dashian published a collection of German documents on the genocide in Armenian translation ( The Deportation of the Armenian Nation according to German Documents ) and a demographic study, The Armenian Population from the Black Sea to Karin . The latter was published in French in 1922.<br />
<br />
This fecund Armenologist passed away on February 3, 1933, at the age of sixty-six. Fifteen years later, his study The Western Frontier of Ancient Armenia (1948), came out of the presses of the Mekhitarist Congregation.</div>

<a href="https://files.constantcontact.com/b83ed870601/c798f64a-cb41-4e62-8e51-848d7ef8d9b1.jpg" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em; text-align: justify;"><img border="0" data-original-height="266" data-original-width="189" src="https://files.constantcontact.com/b83ed870601/c798f64a-cb41-4e62-8e51-848d7ef8d9b1.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Megerdich Portugalian spent the last half of his life far from his homeland, but he never ceased working for its welfare as one of the forerunners of the Armenian revolutionary movement.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He was born in the neighborhood of Kum Kapu, in Constantinople. He first went to the Bezjian School. The death of his father in 1859 was, understandably, a big blow to the family. In 1862 he transferred to Sahagian School in the neighborhood of Samatia and graduated from high school the next year. He went to work with his French teacher Pierre Trois, who was the owner of a bookstore, and helped him with the publication of a booklet, The Armenian Question, in Armenian and French, in 1864.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
After the death of his mother the next year, Portugalian opened his own bookstore in 1866 and worked for the next two years there, while giving private lessons to the children of well-to-do families. He was forced to close the bookstore in 1868. He would become acquainted and establish close relations with important public figures of the time, such as Khrimian Hayrig, who was briefly Armenian Patriarch of Constantinople (1869-1873), Krikor Odian, one of the writers of the Ottoman Constitution of 1876, and Archbishop Nerses Varjabedian, Khrimian’s successor as Patriarch (1874-1884).</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Portugalian had a breakthrough in 1869, when two Armenians from Tokat sent him there at their own expense to teach at the local Voskian Lyceum. He worked towards the improvement of the school level and the local social life. He married in 1871 and opened the Vartanian Girls’ School in 1872 with forty students. His work of educational and public awakening led him to a struggle with conservative elements of the society until he was accused of being a revolutionary to the Ottoman government. As a result, Portugalian was called to Constantinople. However, he returned the next year to continue his fight, but he was arrested and jailed. Only the intervention of the governor of Sepastia freed him in 1874, after which he was recalled to Constantinople for good.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He became the editor of the periodical Asia where he took his struggle against the conservative elements of the community in the capital of the Ottoman Empire. The government shut down the newspaper in 1875. Portugalian did not remain inactive. He founded the Varaztadian Society to enlighten people with lectures and courses, while contributing to various newspapers in Constantinople and the Caucasus, writing under pseudonyms. In 1876 he was one of the founders of the Araratian Society whose center of activities was in Van. These activities were not well regarded by the government, and as a result, Portugalian fled to the Caucasus in 1877 and settled in Tiflis for the next two years. He returned to Van in 1879, founding a Teachers College under the sponsorship of the Araratian School, which also sponsored six other schools in the city.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Portugalian’s activities were a source of worry for the Armenian leadership in Constantinople, and in 1880 he was recalled to the capital, and the Teachers College was closed. However, he returned once again the next year and founded the Central School in 1881. The school was closed in 1885, but its graduates would become the founders of the first Armenian political party, the Armenagan Organization, in the same year. Fearing persecution, Portugalian, his wife, and two daughters fled the Ottoman Empire and settled in Marseilles (France). Here, on August 1, 1885, he published the first issue of the weekly Armenia.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In the meantime, Portugalian worked to gather all Armenian political efforts around a single organization. In 1886 he founded the Armenian Patriotic Union in Marseilles. However, some members of the organization, including the couple Avetis and Maro Nazarbek, who after failing to take it toward a socialist orientation, went their own way in 1887 and founded the Social-Democrat Hunchakian Party in Geneva (Switzerland). During the next decades, Portugalian’s public advocacy would be focused on his newspaper, which would extend his influence over the Armenians in Europe. He would be editor, copyeditor, and distributor of Armenia, with his daughters as typesetters. In 1913 the fortieth anniversary of his public life was commemorated in Constantinople.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Portugalian edited Armenia until his death in Marseilles on September 27, 1921. His legacy would survive him. Four days later, on October 1, 1921, the remnants of the Armenagan Organization whose foundation he had inspired would merge with three other political parties to constitute the Armenian Democratic Liberal (Ramgavar Azadagan) Party, the last of the three “traditional” parties existing today in the Diaspora and, after the independence of Armenia in 1991, in the homeland.</div>

<br />
<div>
<br />
<div>
<br />
<br />
<br />

In Soviet times, Armenian culture had its share of absurd and, sometimes, enigmatic deaths. Three of their representatives ended their lives when they were on or about to become forty-seven-years-old. Poet Paruyr Sevak (1924-1971) and painter Minas Avetisian (1928-1975) died in car accidents whose circumstances have not been totally elucidated. A less known name, writer Moushegh Galshoyan, would also share that tragic fate.<br />
<br />
Galshoyan was born Moushegh Manoukian on December 13, 1933, in the village of Mehriban, now Katnaghbiur, in the area of Talin (district of Aragatzotn). His parents were survivors of the genocide from the area of Sasoun. His father had lost his first wife and four children during the massacres.<br />
<br />
The future writer, who would take the ancestral Galshoyan name, reflected in his ethos and his literature the heritage of Sasoun to the point that his writings about the survivors of that area seemed to have been the work of someone who was born and lived there, and had shared the nightmare of the massacre and deportation.<br />
<br />
Galshoyan graduated from the Agricultural Institute of Yerevan in 1957 and worked for a few years in his field, until he switched to journalism. In the 1960s he worked first at the three-weekly Avangard and, afterwards, at the newly founded monthly of the Writers Union of Armenia, Garoun, which became one of the freshest voices of Armenian literature.<br />
<br />
The distance from journalism to literature was not too big, and in 1969 Galshoyan published his first collection of short stories, Crane. However, he established his maturity as a writer with the short novel Dzori Miro, first published in 1971 in Garoun. Here, he introduced still present and fresh questions about the past and the impossibility to come to terms with the world for the injustice that had been committed. The writer’s heroes seemed to be the actual offspring of the heroes of the national epic David of Sasoun, as they shared their qualities, and the fedayees who had fought against Turkish oppression at the beginning of the twentieth century. In 1971 he graduated from the courses of the Institute of Literature “Maxim Gorki” of Moscow. He published a second collection of short stories, Flourished Stones (1973), and the novel Where They Toast Linen (1974).<br />
<br />
On October 15, 1980, two months before his forty-seventh birthday, Moushegh Galshoyan was killed in his birthplace, Katnaghbiur, from an accidental shot from his own gun when he had stopped to take a break during hunting. In 1981 a posthumous collection of his short stories, The Clouds of Mount Marout, was released, and earned him the State Prize of Armenia. His novel Dzori Miro was published as a book in 1983. Two years before, it had become a successful film, with Sos Sargsian in the main role.Vartan Matiossianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06641475268460213986noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1156058546032901783.post-43747521868861215682019-10-05T22:15:00.001-04:002020-07-22T11:26:17.414-04:00Էդուարդ Միրզոյեան (մահ՝ 5 Հոկտեմբեր, 2012)<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Composer Edward Mirzoyan was a noted name in the music of Soviet Armenia and president of the Composers Union for more than three decades. He was born in Gori, Georgia, on May 12, 1921. His stepfather was composer Mikayel Mirzayan (1888-1958).<br />
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Mirzoyan later moved to Armenia and graduated in 1941 from the creative section of the Yerevan Conservatory. By that time he had already composed his first works, including two popular songs based on Avetik Isahakian’s poems, “They Say That…” and “Dream.” He served in the Soviet army from March-November 1942, organizing army ensembles of songs and dances. From 1946-48 he continued his studies at the musical studio of the House of Armenian Culture in Moscow. Returning to Yerevan, he taught at his alma mater from 1948 onwards, becoming a full professor in 1965.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
From 1950-1952 he was executive secretary of the Composers Union of Armenia and its president from 1956-1991, becoming honorary president in 1994, and president of the Peace Fund of Armenia from 1977-2009 (honorary president in 2009). He toured the United States and Canada in 1963. In the same year he earned the title of Popular Artist of Soviet Armenia, one among various awards and honorific titles he received throughout his life.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>

He wrote songs based on poems by Avetik Isahakian and Yeghishe Charents. Some of his works were characterized by their dynamism, such as “Symphonic Dances,” “Festive Prelude,” “Introduction and Perpetuum Mobile” (for violin and orchestra). His “String Quartet” is one of the interesting words of Armenian chamber music. His cantatas, like “Armenia,” “Festive,” and others, are suffused with patriotic spirit. He contributed several symphonic works of particular value such as the sonata for cello and piano” and the symphony for string orchestra and timpani. He also wrote “Album for My Grandchild,” “Poem for Piano,” “Poem-Epitaph for Chamber Orchestra,” and other works.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Mirzoyan has also written the music of several Armenian movies, such as Collapse (1959), Chaos (1974), The President of the Revolutionary Committee (1977), Exile No. 11 (1979), and The Pharmacy at the Corner (1988), and the documentary Today Is a Sunny Day (1975).</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Some of Mirzoyan’s students were famous composers like Jivan Ter-Tadevosian, Constantine Orbelian, Avet Terterian, Vache Sharafian, Khachatur Avetisian, Robert Amirkhanian, and others.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>

This year is the hundredth birth anniversary of Gevorg Emin, one of the fine names of the poetry of Armenia in the second half of the past century, along with Hamo Sahian, Hovhannes Shiraz, Silva Kaputikian, Hrachia Hovhannisian, and especially Paruyr Sevak, who took the mantle after the death of Yeghishe Charents during the Stalinist purges.<br />
<br />
He was born Gevorg Muratian on September 30, 1919, in the town of Ashtarak. He was forced to adopt the name Karlen in the 1930s, at a time when there was the so-called “Communist baptisms.” In 1940 he graduated from the school of Hydrotechnics of the Polytechnic Institute “Karl Marx” of Yerevan (now the State Engineering University of Armenia). However, he soon shifted to literature and in the same year published his first book of poetry, Initial Path, in 1940, which he signed Gevorg Emin. He worked from 1940-1942 at the Matenadaran and in the district of Vardenis. He was wounded during his participation in World War II from 1942-1944.<br />
<br />
Emin went to study at the studio of Armenian writers, which was attached to the Literary Institute of Moscow, from 1949-1950. He returned to Armenia and became the Yerevan correspondent of the Moscow literary weekly Literaturnaya Gazeta (1951-1954). In 1951 he won the State Prize of the Soviet Union for his collection New Road, published two years before. In 1954 he was back to the Soviet capital and studied until 1956 in the higher literary courses adjunct to the Writers Union of the Soviet Union.<br />
<br />
In the Stalin years, Emin had started finding his own voice amid ideological restraints and criticism. His poetry, where the reflections on humanity, his people, and the homeland were matched with a more free style in composition, gained critical attention from the 1960s. Between 1968 and 1972 he was the editor in chief of the monthly Literaturnaya Armenia, published by the Writers Union of Armenia in Russian. Afterwards, he entered the Institute of Art of the Academy of Sciences as a senior researcher. In 1976 he won the State Prize of the Soviet Union for the second time after the publication of his book Land, Love, Century, and in 1979 he won the prize “Charents” in Armenia.<br />
<br />
Besides a steady flow of poetry, published in some two dozen books, Emin was also a prolific author of essays, which were collected in several volumes, including Seven Songs about Armenia (1974), the most popular. The latter was derived from his script for the homonymous film, shot in 1967 by Grigor Melik-Avakian, which earned prizes in festivals in Yerevan and Leningrad (St. Petersburg). He was a prolific translator and gathered his best works in Book of Translations (1984). At the same time, his poetry was translated into many languages, including English (Land, Love, and Century, 1988).<br />
<br />
Gevorg Emin was always a non-conformist writer, and his essays published in the twilight of the Soviet regime and in the first years of independence brought new elements to understand the immediate past. He passed away on June 11, 1998, at the age of seventy-eight.Vartan Matiossianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06641475268460213986noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1156058546032901783.post-12875020369952145882019-09-19T22:06:00.000-04:002020-07-16T11:05:51.533-04:00Birth of Yervant Odian (September 19, 1869)<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://files.constantcontact.com/b83ed870601/f86c997a-468d-44d8-a640-2e9fbca81fb3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em; text-align: justify;"><img border="0" data-original-height="320" data-original-width="233" src="https://files.constantcontact.com/b83ed870601/f86c997a-468d-44d8-a640-2e9fbca81fb3.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A century and a half ago, “the greatest Armenian satirist born for laughter” after Hagop Baronian, in the words of novelist Shirvanzade, was born in Constantinople. Yervant Odian would surpass Baronian, the premier name in Armenian satirical literature, by the sheer number and variety of his works. His ability to write stories at any given instant was unique. Many of Odian’s works were published in daily installments, following the French model of the feuilleton, and some of them remained unpublished as books for long decades.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Born on September 19, 1869, Օdian grew up at the home of his uncle, the statesman and political figure Krikor Odian, where he witnessed the debates of famous literary names. He attended the Berberian Lyceum from 1882-1883, but he dropped out due to his weakness and completed his education with private tutors and insatiable reading in Armenian and French.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He started his literary career in 1887 with translations and literary studies. Five years later, he became assistant editor of the famous daily Hairenik of the Ottoman capital. He was producing a steady flow of chronicles, short stories, and novellas, drawing upon social and political issues. In 1896 Odian became editor of Hairenik, but in the same year, the persecutions and massacres started in Constantinople prompted him to leave the Ottoman Empire. For the next twelve years he would live as an exile in Greece, Paris, England, Austria, Egypt, and India, which he later portrayed in a memoir entitled Twelve Years Out of Constantinople (1912-1913). He published several newspapers in Greece, Paris, and Egypt, and wrote many works, including a series of stories under the title of The Parasites of the Revolution (1899).</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
After the Ottoman Revolution, Odian returned to Constantinople in 1909. He continued writing and publishing several satirical newspapers. In the period 1909-1915 he wrote several of his masterpieces of political and social satire: the first two parts of his novel The Comrade Panchooni (1910 and 1914), Family, Honor, Moral (1910), The Letters of a Trader (1914), The Wife of the Councilman (1915), two detective novels about the tyrannical rule of Abdul Hamid, Abdul Hamid and Sherlock Holmes (1911) and Saliha Hanum or the Army against the Tyrant (1912), his satirical profiles of Armenian political representatives ( Our Deputies, 1913). He also translated from French into Armenian Leo Tolstoy’s Resurrection (1910) and Anna Karenina (1911), as well as works by Emile Zola, Feodor Dostoyevsky, Maxim Gorky, Mark Twain, and others. He also wrote a series of profiles of Armenian politicians, called Our Deputies (1913).</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Odian avoided the roundup of April 24, 1915, but was arrested in August 1915 and deported. However, he survived three years and a half of a deportee life, and he depicted his recollections in the memoir Accursed Years (1918-1919). He returned to Constantinople after the armistice of October 1918 and resumed his literary activities, again contributing to newspapers (he contributed daily columns to various newspapers simultaneously) while editing some newspapers of his own and writing more novels, such as the three-volume The Spy Number 17 (1919-1921) and several others.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Like many other intellectuals, Odian abandoned Constantinople in 1922 after the triumph of the Kemalist movement and moved to Bucharest (Romania). Two years later, he moved to Tripoli (Lebanon), and then to Cairo (Egypt). He passed away օ n October 3, 1926, and was buried at the cemetery of Mar Mina.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The works of Yervant Odian have been translated into many languages (Turkish, French, Bulgarian, Greek, Spanish, and others). Both Comrade Panchooni and Accursed Years have been translated into English.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In 1964 Odian’s story “The False Spy,” directed by Henrik Malian, became one of the episodes of the film Monsieur Jacques and the Others, produced by Armenfilm. Almost three decades later, in 1992, Arman Manarian directed a cinematographic version of Comrade Panchoon that was also released by Armenfilm in Armenia. A street of Yerevan and a school in Vagharshapat have been named after Yervant Odian.</div>

<a href="https://files.constantcontact.com/b83ed870601/61395f10-4a6d-4a5e-a0b8-e2ca29ed91fa.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="418" data-original-width="316" height="320" src="https://files.constantcontact.com/b83ed870601/61395f10-4a6d-4a5e-a0b8-e2ca29ed91fa.jpg" width="241" /></a></div>
Like Raffi among Eastern Armenians, Dzerentz was a popular novelist among Western Armenians whose historical novels, although far removed in time from the present, inspired many with patriotic ideas.<br />
<br />
He was born Hovsep Shishmanian on September 16, 1822, in Constantinople, in an Armenian Catholic family. At the age ten, his parents sent him to the Mekhitarist monastery on the island of San Lazzaro (Venice), but after five years of studies, he refused to become a celibate priest, and in 1837 returned to his birthplace. He worked for a few years as a teacher of Armenian language, literature, and history, and in 1843 he traveled to Tiflis, starting a long journey through Eastern and Western Armenia to get acquainted with the places and the people of the homeland. He would later contribute his impressions to Armenian newspapers in Constantinople, adopting the pseudonym Dzerentz ( dzer means “old person” in Armenian).<br />
<br />
In 1848 Dzerentz decided to pursue medical studies and departed for Paris, where he studied Medicine at the Sorbonne, while at the same time he taught at the Samuel-Moorat lyceum of the Mekhitarists in Paris. The revolution of 1848 in France, which spread throughout Europe, and the Italian liberation movement had a great impact over the future writer’s thinking. He made friends with other Armenian students in the French capital, like Krikor Odian, Nahabed Rusinian, and Stepan Voskan, who would have an important role in the “awakening” ( Zartonk ) of Western Armenian intellectual life.<br />
<div>
<br />
After graduation, Dzerentz returned to Constantinople in 1853 and pursued his professional career, while actively participating in Armenian public life. He wrote articles about educational issues, participated in the preparatory works of the Armenian Constitution passed in 1860, and fought against the confessional disputes that plagued the Armenian Catholic community.<br />
<br />
On the eve of the rebellion of Zeitoun (1862), Dzerentz traveled to Cilicia with the aim of working in the educational field and opening an agricultural school. However, he was subject to political persecution and forced to return to Constantinople.<br />
<br />
Through Krikor Odian’s intervention, Dzerentz went to work at one of the hospitals of Constantinople as a physician in 1872. Two years later, his wife passed away, leaving him alone with his fourteen-year-old daughter Takouhi. A year later, the intrigues of some French Catholic nuns forced the director of the hospital to fire him. In 1876 the Ottoman government sent him to Cyprus, then an exile area, to work as a doctor.<br />
<br />
Two years later, Dzerentz abandoned the Ottoman Empire and moved to Tiflis with his daughter, who had married there. In the last ten years of his life, he would become a very popular novelist, making an important contribution to the genesis and development of the historical novel. In 1877 he had published his first novel, Toros, Son of Levon , about the life and exploits of prince Toros of Cilicia (1145-1169), which enjoyed huge success. Once in Tiflis, he taught at the Nersisian School and in 1877-1878 he traveled to Van, Alashkert, and Basen to bring medical help to the population during the Russian-Turkish war.<br />
<br />
Dzerentz published in rapid succession his second novel, Travails of the Ninth Century (1879), which dealt with the rebellion of villager Hovnan of Sassoun against the Arab domination in 852-853, and his third novel, Teotoros Reshtuni (1881), about the situation in Armenia during the Byzantine-Persian wars of the seventh century. The popularity of Dzerentz novels would survive him until our days.<br />
<br />
The writer lost his twenty-four-year-old daughter in 1884, and this was a terrible blow for him. His health quickly decayed and he died in Tiflis from a heart attack on February 17, 1888, at the age of sixty-six.<br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />

<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", Times, serif; font-size: x-small;">Nigoghos Tashjian is not a familiar name when we speak of Armenian religious music, but we owe to him the use of modern notation to transcribe the ancient hymns and songs. In this way, those pieces were rescued from becoming undecipherable for modern musicians and musicologists.</span></span></span></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #403f42;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: x-small;"><br /></span></span></span></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #403f42;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", Times, serif; font-size: x-small;">Tashjian was born in Constantinople on June 17, 1841. He studied at the Nersesian School of Haskeuy, where he was a student of Kapriel Yeranian (author of the music for the song “Guiliguia”).</span></span></span></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #403f42;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: x-small;"><br /></span></span></span></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #403f42;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", Times, serif; font-size: x-small;">In the 1860s Tashjian was involved in the publication of several music journals. First, he published a semi-annual journal called </span><span style="font-style: italic;">Nvak osmanian </span><span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", Times, serif; font-size: x-small;">(“Ottoman Melody”), with his brother Hagopig Tashjian, and then he joined his teacher Yeranian to publish another periodical, </span><span style="font-style: italic;">Knar Arevelian </span><span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", Times, serif; font-size: x-small;">(“Oriental Lyre”). In 1863 Tashjian, Vartan Papazian, and composer Tigran Chuhajian (the author of the first Armenian opera, “Arshag II”) published together yet another music journal, </span><span style="font-style: italic;">Osmanian yerazhshdutiun </span><span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", Times, serif; font-size: x-small;">(“Ottoman Music”). All three journals were printed in lithography (from a stone plate, hence the name) and included Armenian and Turkish songs.</span></span></span></span><br />
</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #403f42;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", Times, serif; font-size: x-small;">Tashjian printed interesting articles in the Armenian press of Constantinople, and in 1871 he was invited to Holy Echmiadzin to teach music at the Kevorkian Seminary, where future composer Makar Yekmalian was his student. Three years later, he published his </span><span style="font-style: italic;">Textbook of Armenian Ecclesiastic Notation</span><span style="font-size: x-small;"> <span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", Times, serif; font-size: 14px;">, where he first explained the notation system of his predecessor Hampartzum Limonjian, and he later presented the nature and a brief history of Armenian music.</span></span></span></span></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #403f42;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: x-small;"><br /></span></span></span></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #403f42;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", Times, serif; font-size: x-small;">His most important service to Armenian music would be, as we said, the use of modern notation to transcribe religious songs and hymns, trying to maintain the authentic meaning of the ancient Armenian </span><span style="font-style: italic;">khaz </span><span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", Times, serif; font-size: x-small;">(neumes). By the second half of the nineteenth century, the key to the </span><span style="font-style: italic;">khaz </span><span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", Times, serif; font-size: x-small;">was lost and there was nobody left to sing them accurately. This is why various authors, like Limonjian and Tashjian, tried to “translate” them into modern notation. Tashjian published four books of transcribed songs in Holy Echmiadzin: </span><span style="font-style: italic;">Songbook of the Divine Liturgy </span><span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", Times, serif; font-size: x-small;">(1874); </span><span style="font-style: italic;">Songbook of Armenian Liturgical Hymns </span><span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", Times, serif; font-size: x-small;">(1875); </span><span style="font-style: italic;">Songs with Notation of the Book of Hours of the Armenian Holy Church</span><span style="font-size: x-small;"> <span style="font-size: 14px;">(1877), and </span><span style="font-style: italic;">Excerpts of Blessings with Notation</span> <span style="font-size: 14px;">(1882).</span></span></span></span></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #403f42;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-style: italic;"> </span><span style="font-size: x-small;"> <span style="font-size: 14px;"> </span></span></span></span></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #403f42;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", Times, serif; font-size: x-small;">In 1879 he returned to Constantinople, where he taught music at various schools and was the choirmaster at the Armenian Cathedral of Constantinople. He was also the author of various patriotic songs, which Yekmalian and Gomidas Vartabed later arranged for polyphonic version.</span></span></span></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #403f42;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: x-small;"><br /></span></span></span></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #403f42;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", Times, serif; font-size: x-small;">Tashjian passed away in Constantinople on September 9, 1885, at the age of forty-four, but his legacy would outlive him and become a stepping stone for his successors in the field of Armenian religious music.</span></span></span></span></div>

Robert Sahakiants was one of the stars of Armenian animation films both in Soviet and post-Soviet times.<br />
<br />
He was born on August 30, 1950, in Baku (Azerbaijan). He moved to Yerevan in 1964 with his family. He finished high school there and entered the Khachatur Abovian Pedagogical Institute (now University). He was twenty-years-old when in 1970 he started working at the Armenfilm studios as an illustrator and animator. Two years later, he directed his first animation film, Lilit. Around that time, he was forced to abandon his studies for low assistance to classes. His fifth animation film, The Book of the Fox (1975), for which he also wrote the scenario based on the proverbs of Armenian medieval authors Vardan Aygektsi and Mekhitar Gosh, was the first Soviet rock-opera. He would write the scenarios for most of his films. In 1987 he earned the title of Artist Emeritus of Soviet Armenia and, in 2008 he became Popular Artist of the Republic of Armenia.<br />
<br />
From 1972-2009 Sahakiants would direct fifty-four movies and write forty-eight scenarios. He also co-authored other animation movies produced by Armenfilm. He produced some of his most popular movies in the 1980s, such as Three Mulberry-Colored, Deep Blue Lakes (1981), Who Says Such a Lie (1982), The Talking Fish (1983), In the Blue Sea, in the White Foam… (1984), The Carnival (1985). His movies obtained awards in festivals held in France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Japan, as well as Ukraine, Russia, and Estonia.<br />
<br />
Several of his movies were based on the tales of Hovhannes Toumanian, such as Kikos’ Death, Nazar the Brave, Three Mulberry-Colored, Deep Blue Lakes, Who Says Such a Lie, The Talking Fish, and The Carnival. Sahakiants did not just revive the classical tales but modernized them and gave them a contemporary sound for children. He created characters bound to be remembered, introduced with colorful “fireworks” and offered with his own interpretation.<br />
<br />
Robert Sahakiants passed on September 24, 2009, in Yerevan, after a long illness and a complex heart surgery. Robert Sahakiants Production, headed by his son Davit, continues his legacy in the field of animated films.<br />
